Resumo

A partir de um breve panorama das influências da caligrafia sobre os primeiros tipos móveis cortados, este artigo vem refletir sobre a importância dos espaços interiores e adjacentes ao desenho das letras no reconhecimento das palavras. A palavra que é constituída por traços sistematizados apresenta compensações espaciais que garantem a formação de sua imagem, dado que a percepção do que ela seja depende dessas relações formais, do reconhecimento do que seja um “i” e não um “l”, por exemplo. O objetivo deste trabalho está em correlacionar o conceito de legibilidade com a percepção da forma da palavra – da imagem da palavra, baseando-se na correspondência entre as formas e contraformas dos desenhos dos tipos de letra.

Abstract

From a brief overview of the influences of the caligraphy on the first cut movable types, this paper seeks to reflect on the importance of the inner and adjacent spaces to the letters’ design in the recognition of the words. A word which is composed by systematized strokes presents spatial compensations that ensure the formation of its image, since the perception of what it is depends on those formal relations, like the acknowledgment of what is an “i” and what is a “l”, for example. The aim of this work lies on correlating the concept of legibility with the perception of the word’s form – the word-image, based on the correspondence between the form and counter-form of the letter typefaces.
