O USO DA METÁFORA NA INTERFACE GRÁFICA COMPUTACIONAL DE SISTEMAS OPERACIONAIS: ORIGENS E APLICAÇÃO CONTEMPORÂNEA / THE METAPHOR USAGE ON GRAPHIC USER INTERFACES OF OPERATING SYSTEMS: ORIGINS AND CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

Abstract

The graphical interfaces present in contemporary operating systems play an important role in popularizing the personal computer as we know it today. Based on metaphors, the graphical interfaces of the major operating systems available on the market are operated by imaging operations on icons and virtual representations that mimic the behavior and appearance of real-world objects and materials. We investigated the historical and contextual origins of these representations and their respective uses as metaphors in the graphic interfaces, describing their contextualized visual assignments, as well as the transformations along the evolution of software, hardware, use and functions of the personal computer. It started from the mechanical interfaces, such as that found in the Bombe of Alan Turing, where the analogous representation of the information with the extra-computational universe is discussed. The transition to the status of a commercial machine with monitor, mouse and keyboard is then sequentially analyzed. At that point, the interface is defined through pictorial representations on a screen, a model used from the 1980s to the contemporary interfaces of miniaturized computing in mobile systems, such as the Material Design interface, available in the Google Android operating system.
