O MÉTODO ANALÍTICO PARAMÉTRICO PARA REVELAR O MODUS OPERANDI DE OSCAR NIEMEYER / THE PARAMETRIC ANALYTICAL METHOD TO EXPOSE OSCAR NIEMEYER’S MODUS OPERANDI

Abstract

The buildings designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer’s are constituted by constructive elements of simple geometry, as line segments and circumference arc. The complexity of its architecture is observed within the interaction between these elements and in the continuity of the points of tangency between lines and curves. This research investigated three buildings with curvilinear geometry, designed for the Memorial of Latin America. Researches that analyze the geometry of this architect’s projects are very scarce. In this paper, parametric modeling (PM) was used as an analytical method to the underlying geometry of the selected projects. Nowadays the great advantage of studying curvilinear geometries through the use of PM lies in the geometric precision and the mathematical calculation capacity, which allows to explore different combination of parameters in order to generate different forms. With this resource you can create a family of shapes, where the search for the best solution is based on the architect’s previous knowledge or on simulation programs. In this research, the parametric interchange was used to analyze the harmony between the parts and the whole within the composition proposed by Niemeyer, demonstrating that the form is the result of a set of compositional factors, especially of geometric principles.

Keywords: geometry; parametric modeling; Oscar Niemeyer; modus operandi.
