A proposta do artigo é discutir os conceitos de design gráfico socialmente engajado, design ativista e ilustração crítica. São apresentados exemplos de ilustrações críticas produzidas por artistas gráficos. Também são expostas ilustrações críticas elaboradas por estudantes de design gráfico. Todos os trabalhos foram embasados em dados de pesquisa exploratória e pesquisa teórica. O artigo também aborda os conceitos de imagem conceitual e cultura visual. Ambos contribuem para o entendimento sobre a importância da ilustração crítica para o designer ilustrador e, da mesma forma, demonstra a relevância do pensamento reflexivo na formação dos novos designers gráficos brasileiros.

Abstract
The purpose of the article is to discuss the concepts of socially engaged graphic design, activist design and critical illustration. Examples of critical illustrations produced by graphic artists are presented. Critical illustrations by graphic design students are also displayed. All works were based on data from exploratory and theoretical research. The article also addresses the concepts of conceptual image and visual culture. Both contribute to the understanding of the importance of critical illustration for the illustrator designer and, in the same way, demonstrates the relevance of reflective thinking in the formation of new Brazilian graphic designers.
