Resumo

O presente artigo investiga projetos residenciais e públicos do arquiteto norte-americano Frank Lloyd Wright por meio de desenhos. Os desenhos dos projetos de Wright revelam intenções e características de sua arquitetura e de seu pensamento urbano. O objetivo deste texto é avaliar o modo peculiar que o arquiteto e sua equipe representavam o projeto, a cidade e suas relações. Tal interpretação se baseia no referencial teórico oferecido pelos seus escritos e de seus críticos. Nota-se que nos desenhos de edifícios públicos o arquiteto insinua uma relação mais próxima com a cidade, traçados urbanos, fluxos de circulação, as pessoas, automóveis e relações de escala e volumetria com o entorno. Em contrapartida, nos desenhos de projetos residenciais o edifício é representado isolado da cidade, geralmente incrustado na natureza, com muitas árvores, vegetação, e sem representação de pessoas, entorno habitado ou outros edifícios. O arquiteto acreditava nas novas tecnologias a favor de mais qualidade de vida e o automóvel era seu grande aliado. A observação atenta dos desenhos revela o pensamento visionário do arquiteto sobre cidade e a sociedade norte-americana na primeira metade do século XX.

Abstract

This paper investigates the drawings of residential and public projects design by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The drawings of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright reveal intentions and characteristics of his architecture. The objective is to evaluate the particular way that the architect and his team represented the project, the city and its relations. This interpretation is based on the theoretical agenda offered by his writings and critics. We can note that at the public buildings drawings the architect suggests a closer relationship with the city, urban layouts, traffic flows, people, cars and scaling relations with the surroundings. In contrast, at the residential drawings Wright represents the single building isolated, usually embedded in nature, with lots of trees, vegetation, with no representation of people, environment or other inhabited buildings. The architect believed the new technology in favor of more quality of life and the car was his great ally. Careful observation of the drawings reveals the architect’s visionary thinking for the city and the American society in the first half of the twentieth century.
