A GEOMETRIA NO PROCESSO CLASSIFICATÓRIO DE FORMAS ARQUITETÔNICAS: ESTUDO COMPOSITIVO COM OBRAS EM MADEIRA ROLIÇA / GEOMETRY ON THE CLASSIFICATION PROCESS OF ARCHITECTURAL FORMS: COMPOSTIVE STUDY BASED ON PROJECTS WITH ROUND WOOD

Abstract

Despite its environmental benefits and efficiency when applied to buildings, the use of roundwood at AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) is still scarce in Brazil. One of the factors that contribute to this low utilization is the lack of knowledge on how to explore compositional alternatives with this material. Limiting itself to strategies that generate three-dimensional compositions (volume level), this work proposes a classification of works which contemplates the use of round wood as the main materiality of its construction. Relating to biology and the concept of phylogenetics, the works were grouped observing their genotype instead of their phenotype. Through the shape grammar method, the compositional processes were analyzed throughout the analysis corpus, allowing a better understanding on the existing solutions. The proposed methodology, besides grouping the analyzed works, generates new formal solutions which were not covered on the analysis corpus. Besides that, it also contributes to the expansion of knowledge about compositional variation and demonstrates the plastic potential of the material for its usage in buildings.

Keywords: shape grammar; ruled surfaces; freeform surfaces; phylogenetics.
