Resumo

Este artigo apresenta a ilustração enquanto relevante elemento da produção editorial, enfatizando sua presença em livros de ficção, e, mais profundamente, em suas capas. Discute-se fatores do processo criativo e características profissionais que se relacionam à prática da ilustração com ênfase nas funções de persuasão e narrativa, entendendo este tipo de imagem como ferramenta projetual do design editorial. Com o objetivo de explorar o papel de ilustradores e apresentar a visão destes quanto aos fatores envolvidos na concepção das capas, considera-se fator basilar o processo criativo de três profissionais laureados com o Prêmio Jabuti na categoria ilustração, quais sejam: Alex Cerveny, Daniel Bueno e Wagner Willian. Foram realizadas entrevistas qualitativas com os ilustradores, focando em suas trajetórias no campo editorial, especialmente no que tange os projetos gráficos premiados aqui abordados. A discussão dos temas resulta em considerações que desvelam complexos procedimentos fundamentais aos projetos de capas ilustradas de sucesso, e elucidam questões sobre: briefing; processo criativo; atuação no design editorial; aspectos gráficos da ilustração e capa.

Abstract

This paper presents the illustration as a relevant element of the editorial design, emphasizing its presence in fiction books, and, more deeply, in its covers. It discusses aspects of the creative process and professional characteristics that relate to the practice of illustration with an emphasis on the functions of persuasion and narrative, understanding this type of image as an essential tool for editorial design. In order to explore the role of illustrators in the covers’ design and presenting their point of views on the factors involved in the design of the covers, the creative process of three professionals awarded the Jabuti Prize in the illustration category is considered a fundamental factor, namely: Alex Cerveny, Daniel Bueno and Wagner Willian. Qualitative interviews were carried out with the illustrators, focusing on their trajectories in the editorial field, especially with regard to the award-winning graphic projects covered here. The discussion of the themes results in considerations that unveils complex procedures fundamental to successful illustrated cover projects, and elucidate questions about: briefing; creative process; performance in editorial design; graphic aspects of both the illustration and book cover.
