A EVOLUÇÃO NA ESTÉTICA DO DESIGN DE INTERFACES: IDENTIFICANDO TENDÊNCIAS / EVOLUTION IN THE VISUAL AESTHETICS OF INTERFACE DESIGN: IDENTIFYING TRENDS

 Abstract

This article presents the results of research on the formation of aesthetic trends in interface design, including Skeuomorphism and Flat Design. Both are tendencies used as an aesthetic reference for the creation of graphic-visual elements in graphical interfaces and differ in the use of visual metaphors. In order to contextualize the aesthetic trends, a literature review on trends and aesthetics was carried out; a brief approach to the history of the first graphical user interfaces; and an analysis of three native applications of the iOS 6 operating system compared to iOS 7. The analysis of application interfaces – in different iOS update versions – allowed us to identify the transition of aesthetic trends: in iOS 6 an Aesthetics of the application referred to Skeuomorphism, while in the current versions – from iOS 7 – the interface represents Flat Design. The analysis included the observation of elements such as typography, color, readability, iconography, and interaction. In this way, it was possible to characterize both tendencies, highlighting the main differences between Skeuomorphism and Flat Design.

Keywords: graphical user interface; trends; Skeuomorphism; Flat Design; analysis.
